Tap Dance Floor

Clogging, step dancing, and stomp dancing are also popular dance styles derived from tap dancing.

One characteristic of a tap floor is that the surface is required to be made out of wood. These types of wood can include maple and oak. Pine is acceptable for a tap floor, but only if the floor is used in moderation. The pine will not withstand extended usage. Over usage of a pine floor can damage it and put divots in it. The surface of a tap floor should never have varnish on it or have wax applied.

A tap dance floor has to have high resiliency. This means that it is somewhat springy when walked on. This kind of floor is also known as a suspended or floating floor system. This characteristic is required to prevent any dancer from permanent injury.

The enjoyable sound made from tap dancing is due to what is known as resonance. This simply means that the tap dance floor has the ability to sound like a drum when performed on. This sound is achieved by installing the tap dance floor at least two inches above the beginning surface. If this sound does not occur, it usually means that the tap floor was installed directly on top of concrete and is not ideal for this type of dance.

A proper tap floor should also be free of cracks. Sticky residue on tap floors is unacceptable as well. These requirements are for the safety of the dancers.

Tap dance floors need to meet many high standards to ensure the safety of the dancer and the quality of the performance. Despite this fact, there have been no commercial companies that can deliver all of the minimum requirements for a tap floor. A true tap floor is pieced together with required materials derived from numerous different sources.
