Disco Dance Floor
The disco dance floor is one of the most fun, entertaining dance floors to use, whether in a dance club or as a special, one of a kind addition to your wedding reception or party. These types of dance floors became very popular in the 1970’s in dance night clubs as well as through film, being showcased as the Saturday Night Fever dance floor.
Disco, or club dance floors are made up of many different elements but the one that is the most obvious is light. The floor literally lights up under your feet, the newer ones with large LED lights and the older ones with colored spotlights which illuminate the floor from underneath. The dance floor can be programmed, even the older ones, to showcase different lights or color patterns at different times. The most common of these floors appears to the guest to be a series of cubes lit from the inside by varying colored spotlights.
The way disco dance floors are made is actually quite simple. They appear to be made of cubes because technically they are. The floor is a metal base that is covered by sections of thick, usually textured or frosted Plexiglas. The glass sections are separated by metal supports which not only hold the panels in place and provide support for the glass as it is danced on by many different people constantly and consistently, but it also keeps the lights from getting too hot and causing the Plexiglas to heat up which could be detrimental to anyone dancing on it.
The supports inside the dance floor give the floor the illusion of cubes or whatever shape that you would like for it to have. Each section of the floor has a different light or series of lights which illuminate only that section, allowing your dance floor to have multiple colored lights shining all at the same time from different sections without the colors mingling or overlapping.
The Plexiglas over the different sections of the club dance floor is extremely durable and thick so that it will not crack with continued, extended use. It is also generally textured or frosted on the inside to allow the actual light itself to be hidden with only the color that it is projecting allowed to come through the floor. This allows the floor to keep the magic behind its many colors hidden without the light apparatus being shown to ruin the illusion.
Many of the new disco dance floors are made using LED lights because they can not only be controlled by a computer, they also burn brighter for longer periods of time at a much cooler temperature, allowing them to be changed very few times over the lifespan of the dance floor whereas a normal light bulb in a spotlight would burn hot and have to be replaced quite frequently.
A disco dance floor can also be made to be mechanical. Mechanical components can be added to the floor, allowing certain sections to move, with the most popular of these being the revolving dance floor which is raised slightly off of the rest of the dance floor and moves slowly in a circle around the night club, creating the ultimate in 1970’s dance club floors.
