For A Dance Floor Wood Is The Way To Go
As you may know, there are a wide variety of dance floors out there to meet all of your budgetary and dancing needs. The type of dance floor that you would require depends largely on what type of dancing you will be doing on it. If you are working in a dance studio where such types of dance as tap, ballet, jazz, and hip-hop classes are common, you may want to consider purchasing a hardwood dance floor.
Wood dance floors are the most common type of flooring in dance studios. They are often more expensive than some generic floors which can be purchased made of imitation material, however the investment will more than pay for itself when you weigh the benefits of a wooden dance floor.
A dance floor made from wood is a great investment for studios first because it supports the dancers’ delicate joints. When dancing, especially continuously over several years, it is common for many dancers to experience joint problems or suffer from injuries related to dance. A wood dance floor can help you to avoid those problems with your students. Wooden dance floors have a certain amount of give or springiness to the material which absorbs some of the shock of jumps, turns, and acrobatics which would ordinarily be absorbed by the dancers’ body. When installing a dance floor wood can be laid in a couple of different ways in order to achieve this: one is to have a floating floor and the other is to have a padding laid under the floor.
A floating floor is one where the wood is laid several inches above the base flooring, usually made of some type of concrete. The floor is suspended over padding and a spring like frame, similar to the box springs under your bed’s mattress. Functioning in this same way, the floor is like dancing on a hard top mattress. It maintains its hard, even surface which allows for you to dance without being concerned over the floor moving, collapsing, or breaking. However, it does have more resiliency which allows for you as a dancer to work as hard as you want to on the floor without risking injury to you joints, particularly your ankles and knees, the most common places for dance related injuries to occur. The floating floor also offers the best acoustics for clogging or tap dancing as the floor is set up with a small amount of space under it which will magnify the tap sounds.
A wood dance floor laid with a pad under it is a bit different from the floating floor. The pad for this dance floor is usually about one inch thick and made of a type of latex rubber which will not break down or flatten as it is used. This pad goes directly on the base flooring and then the wood floor is laid over it, so it is much closer to the level of the subfloor. This type of dance flooring offers almost the same resiliency as the floating floor, but is more economical and does not offer the same acoustical advantages.
